In a shocking turn of events during a recent NBA game against the Sacramento Kings, young center Alperen Şengün of the Houston Rockets was forced to leave the court in a wheelchair after a horrifying injury.
The incident occurred on the morning of March 11 (Vietnam time), leaving the Turkish big man in agony as he landed awkwardly while attempting to block a shot from Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings. Şengün suffered a severe injury to his right knee and ankle, with his screams audible through television broadcasts, highlighting the immense pain experienced by one of the most talented young centers in the NBA.
Due to the excruciating pain, Alperen Şengün was wheeled off the court, and even the player responsible for the collision, Domantas Sabonis, appeared shocked and concerned, holding his head in worry.
As of now, there is no update on Şengün’s condition from the Houston Rockets. Head coach Ime Udoka mentioned that the team would conduct X-rays and an MRI on both the knee and ankle of Alperen to assess the extent of the injuries.
“We will provide updates at an appropriate time, and for now, we ask for your thoughts and prayers for him,” stated the Houston Rockets head coach.
Alperen Şengün, 21 years old and in his third NBA season, has been a crucial player for the Rockets this season, averaging 21.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. Often compared to “Little Jokic” for his diverse skill set and efficient play despite not having an overly muscular physique, Şengün recently showcased his talent with a career-high 45 points and a triple-double in consecutive games.
The unfortunate injury comes at a crucial time for the Houston Rockets, who have been performing exceptionally well recently, securing four victories in their last five games. Şengün’s absence, leading in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks for the team, poses a significant challenge for the Rockets as they aim for a miraculous comeback in the Play-in race.
For Alperen Şengün personally, this injury occurs at the peak of his career, casting doubt on the trajectory of his future development. The void left by his absence will be filled by the young duo of Jock Landale and Jabari Smith Jr., along with the experienced big man Jeff Green, who will see increased playing time until the end of the season.
