Since parting ways with the New England Patriots in January, Bill Belichick has maintained a relatively low profile. However, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach recently emerged from his hiatus by attending a spring practice session at the University of Washington.
Belichick, who had not been spotted on a football field for nearly three months, surprised many by showing up to support the team, donning a Washington hoodie and hat. For someone accustomed to seeing him in Patriots attire during his 24-year tenure in New England, the sight of Belichick in a different team’s gear was somewhat unexpected.
This marks the first time Belichick has been seen sporting a Washington hoodie, but it likely won’t be the last. His son, Steve, was appointed as the team’s defensive coordinator in February, suggesting a continued presence for the Belichick family at the university.
Steve expressed his delight at having his father present during practice, stating, “It was cool. I’m glad he got to come out here. I look up to him in so many different areas. To have him out here, it’s been awesome.” This marks a new chapter for Steve, who previously served on the Patriots’ coaching staff under his father’s leadership since 2012.
Belichick’s involvement at the University of Washington extended beyond practice, as he was also a featured speaker at a coaching clinic hosted by the school on Saturday. Despite his lengthy coaching career in the NFL, this spring presents a rare opportunity for the 71-year-old Belichick to explore other interests, as it marks the first time since 1974 that he doesn’t hold an NFL coaching position.
While Belichick’s plans for the offseason remain undisclosed, speculation has arisen about potential media engagements or even the authoring of a book. Regardless, it seems certain that Belichick will find ways to stay engaged and active during his time away from the sidelines.
