The Detroit Lions have undergone a significant transformation in their roster through a combination of strategic drafting and shrewd moves in free agency, aiming to shake off the disappointments of their three-win season in 2021.
As they gear up for the 2024 season, the Lions find themselves with two units that have earned the distinction of being the finest in the entire National Football League, as recognized by Sports Illustrated.
According to NFL writer Matt Verderame, the Lions’ running backs and offensive line units stand head and shoulders above the rest in the league. Despite initial skepticism from some draft experts regarding the selection of Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round last year, Gibbs silenced critics with a stellar rookie season that not only validated his selection but also prompted general manager Brad Holmes to praise the scouting department’s acumen.
Meanwhile, the addition of veteran David Montgomery proved to be a masterstroke, as he seamlessly integrated into the Lions’ setup and fulfilled the coaching staff’s expectations following the overhaul of the running backs room in the previous offseason.
“Following a slow start, the dynamic duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs hit their stride midway through the 2023 season, propelling the Lions to the NFC championship game,” writes Verderame. “Once Gibbs found his rhythm as a rookie, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson unleashed his playbook, showcasing a variety of looks to keep opposing defenses guessing.”
Despite the departure of Jonah Jackson, Detroit’s offensive line remains a formidable force, with Verderame highlighting its pivotal role in facilitating Johnson’s potent rushing attack.
“If Jason Kelce had opted to stay with the Philadelphia Eagles, they would have been strong contenders. However, with Kelce’s departure, the Lions step up and claim the top spot for their second positional group title,” Verderame elaborates. “With Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell anchoring the tackles and the interior featuring All-Pro center Frank Ragnow alongside seasoned guard Graham Glasgow, the Lions’ offensive line is poised for continued success.”
