The 2024 NFL Draft looms just a week ahead, and as customary, whispers of potential draft surprises are starting to circulate. One player generating considerable buzz is Michigan defensive back Mike Sainristil. According to a scout cited by Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, there’s speculation that Sainristil could defy expectations and secure a spot in the first round, attributed to his adaptability as a nickel cornerback proficient in both coverage and blitzing.

Originally a wide receiver, Sainristil made a transition to defensive back for his final two seasons at Michigan. During this tenure, he showcased his prowess with notable statistics, including 64 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, seven interceptions, 13 passes defensed, and two forced fumbles over the span of two years. Particularly noteworthy was his stellar performance in 2023, where he snagged a career-high six interceptions, two of which resulted in touchdowns.

Sainristil’s versatility and impact haven’t gone unnoticed. He earned a place on CBS Sports Senior NFL Writer Pete Prisco’s “Better-Than Team” for the 2024 NFL Draft. Praising his adaptability and playmaking abilities, Prisco likened him to the Cincinnati Bengals’ Mike Hilton, highlighting Sainristil’s ability to compensate for his stature with intelligence and tenacity on the field.

Despite being projected by CBS Sports NFL Draft expert Josh Edwards to be selected early in the third round at No. 71 overall in his recent seven-round mock draft, Sainristil’s draft stock appears to be on the rise. While he may be undersized, his on-field talent speaks volumes, suggesting that he could be a valuable addition to any NFL roster.
